During Tuesday’s Opelika Council Worksession, Alabama State Representative for District 83, Jeremy Gray, addressed the council regarding his Gun Violence Prevention Initiative.
When we first created this proposal, we drew inspiration from similar models that have already seen great success in places like Montgomery, Birmingham, and Mobile. We recognized a need for this initiative in East Alabama, covering areas such as Opelika, Auburn, Lee County, and Russell County. I believe a regional approach that spans multiple jurisdictions will be effective because it addresses populations similar to those in Montgomery, Birmingham, and Mobile.
I understand that the need for this initiative extends beyond just school-aged children; even adults require support. The data suggests we could potentially reduce retaliatory violence by 30-60%. I envision this as a community-led effort — not driven by me or by law enforcement, but by the community itself — to de-escalate conflicts before they escalate to violence or shootings.
This initiative represents a partnership between the community and law enforcement, with the goal of building trust within the community. It is essential that this effort be led by the people on the ground, with law enforcement collaborating to ensure its success.
