On Thursday, Lee County officials held a Liberty Tree dedication to the Lee County Daughters of the American Revolution outside the Lee County Justice Center.

Lee County is one of 52 Alabama counties selected to receive a Liberty Tree through the statewide initiative. Each participating county is receiving a 6- to 8-foot Princeton elm and a commemorative bronze plaque recognizing the historic milestone.

Probate Judge Jerre Colley fieded questions from Local Media. Why was it so imprant to have the dediation here”?, asked on reporter.

“It was important to have it here because we’re here in front
of the justice center in the war memorial and for the people that gave
their lives for the liberty that we enjoy today.

The Liberty Tree tree has a really wonderful history. In Massachusetts and Boston, there was a Liberty tree that many of the patriots gathered under to discuss freedom and what to do about their problems with Great Britain.

When the British took over Boston, they chopped the tree down, thinking
that it could make a difference in not getting rid of that gathering place. Afterwards, Liberty trees popped up all over New England where people could gather and talk about liberty.

Today,we’ve got a liberty tree right here in Lee County that will give us a chance to talk about our community and our future. I think it’s a really exciting thing”, said Colley.

Colley later thanked the Lee County’s leadership for planting the trees early, and to get the rains to get the roots established.
