Fred Walker of Fredonia, Alabama, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 28, 2026, at his beloved log cabin overlooking the Five Acre Pond.
Fred was born on April 5, 1942, in LaGrange, Georgia, to Johnson and Irene Folds Walker.
Work and providing for others were Fred’s love language. Throughout his life, he worked primarily as a weaver for West Point Stevens before retiring from Lanier Mill. He loved recruiting anyone willing to lend a hand on his many projects and always found creative ways to make a dollar. Whether buying and recycling scrap metal, peddling fresh fruits and vegetables, shelling hundreds of pounds of pecans each year, or operating Paula’s and Rebel’s booths at Timeless Antiques in Valley, Fred stayed busy doing what he loved. Before his health began to decline several years ago, he also enjoyed attending auctions, taking casino trips, gardening, woodworking, beekeeping, and caring for his chickens.
When Fred wasn’t working, nothing brought him more joy than spending time with family and friends at the pond—fishing, grilling, frying catfish, and enjoying a toddy. His favorite time of year was his birthday, and he insisted on celebrating with a big party every year surrounded by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. Everyone was welcome, and nothing made him happier than watching the people he loved enjoy themselves.
Fred is survived by his children, Paula (Donald) Patterson, Jamey (Kim) Walker, Christopher (Jerilyn) Walker, Cindy McConnell, Chree (Steve) Walker, Tommy (Laura) Payne, and Helena Ransom. His legacy lives on through his many grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, his sister, Kathy Holloway, and his special friend, Thelma, whom he lovingly called “Sweet Pea.”
Fred was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pauline Walker; his parents, Johnson and Irene Walker; his brothers, William, Lee, David, Junior, and Howard Walker; grandchildren, Trey Ransom, Tristen Etchison and Rachel Nolt; great-grandson, David Smith; and his cherished furbabies, Rebel and Jack.
Graveside services for Fred will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. (EDT) at Harmony Memorial Park in Lanett, Alabama. In accordance with his wishes, his daughter Paula will officiate. Following the service, family and friends are invited to celebrate Fred’s life at his home, located at 6289 County Road 222, Five Points, Alabama 36855.
