OPELIKA – On Tuesday, the Opelika City Council recognized Ronnie Ware as the Character Council Citizen of the Month for his tireless work and dedication to the community. Opelika Mayor Eddie Smith, along with Councilmembers George Allen and Chuck Beams, honored Ware while family and friends looked on with pride.

“One of the privileges we have once a month is the opportunity to recognize a citizen in our community,” said Mayor Smith.

Councilmember Beams, who nominated Ware for Citizen of the Month, read the following:

“It is my honor and privilege to nominate Ronnie Ware as the Citizen of Character for April, recognizing the trait of kindness.

Ronnie Ware is a dedicated community leader and businessman known throughout Opelika for his warmth, generosity, and tireless support of others. Born in LaFayette, Alabama, to Terry and Lola Ware, Ronnie moved to Opelika at an early age and graduated from Opelika High School, Class of 1978. He went on to study business at Southern Union State Community College and began his automotive career in 1983 as a sales associate at Village Toyota in Auburn. Later, he continued his work at Glynn Smith Motor Company. In 1989, he became a co-owner of that business, which later became Gentry and Ware Motor Company, where he now serves as the sole proprietor.

Throughout his career, Ronnie’s leadership and commitment to serving others have been central to his work. Beyond his business, he has been deeply involved in serving the community. He has contributed his time and leadership to numerous organizations across Lee County, including the Opelika Industrial Development Authority, where he has served the City of Opelika for over 20 years. In that role, he has been an integral part of the city’s growth, consistently willing to step in and help—whether working with prospects, supporting initiatives, or offering guidance in the boardroom. Additionally, Ronnie has served on the boards of the Four Seasons Federal Credit Union, the MLK Dream Day Foundation, the Alabama Independent Auto Dealers Association, the Chrysler Minority Dealers Association, the Boys & Girls Club, the Lee County Achievement Center, and 100 Black Men of America.

Ronnie is also widely known for his generosity and strong support of Opelika High School and its student-athletes. He consistently dedicates his time and resources to support local schools, community organizations, churches, and individuals in need. Whether helping with Opelika High School programs, supporting community initiatives, or quietly assisting neighbors and friends, Ronnie has built a reputation for being there when people need him most.

What stands out most, however, is the personal way Ronnie demonstrates kindness. He is approachable, encouraging, and genuinely invested in others. I have experienced this firsthand. During my campaign, Ronnie took time to meet with me, offer guidance, and encourage. He did not have to do that—but that is who he is. He gives his time freely to help others succeed. Those who know Ronnie best describe him as an honest and respected businessman who has spent over 30 years building not only a successful company but also an impeccable reputation grounded in integrity and care for others.

Mayor Smith then publicly thanked Ware on behalf of the council. “Ronnie, it is a great pleasure to acknowledge your outstanding character within the city of Opelika. Your goodwill toward mankind in our city has not gone unnoticed. We hope that others will see your good works and model your actions. Please continue making a difference in the city of Opelika and throughout the world,” added Mayor Smith.

Following these remarks, the chamber erupted in applause.
