OPELIKA, Ala. – The Southern Union State Community College Women’s Soccer Team continues its remarkable season after securing its second consecutive state championship, adding another historic chapter to the young program.

The Bison now turn their attention to the postseason as they travel to Pensacola, Florida, for the NJCAA Region Tournament. Southern Union will face Georgia Military College, the Georgia state champion, in the regional semifinal match at 1 p.m. (CT) on Friday.

With a victory, the Bison would advance to the Regional Final at 1 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, where they would face either Pensacola State College or Cape Fear Community College (N.C.). The regional champion will earn a coveted berth in the NJCAA National Tournament in November.

Southern Union Head Coach Mac Matthews praised the team’s accomplishments and the character that has defined the program throughout the season.

“This is one of the rare teams that makes Southern Union’s mission relatively simple: we have only had to equip and empower them and then stand back and applaud as they consistently represent us beautifully both on and off the field,” Matthews said.

“That they are talented on the field should be glaringly obvious, but it’s the rest of their story that really needs to be told. They make excellent grades, proactively care for each other and those in their circles of influence, and make my job a joy on a daily basis by bringing passion, discipline, and laughter everywhere they go. I’ve never been prouder of or enjoyed coaching a team as much as this one.”

With a regional title and national tournament berth on the line, the Bison are ready for their next challenge as they continue a season that has already cemented their place among the among the nation’s elite Junior College teams.
