OPEIKA, Ala. — The Southern Union Foundation hosted its annual Blue Jeans and Bling Gala on April 9, bringing together supporters, alumni, and community partners for an evening of celebration and impact. The event highlighted the presentation of the Outstanding Alumni Award and the Distinguished Community Partner Award, recognizing individuals and organizations that exemplify excellence and service.
The Distinguished Alumni Award honors a Southern Union alum who has made significant contributions to society while demonstrating loyalty and commitment to the college’s legacy of excellence. This year’s award was presented to Dr. Paul S. Smith.
Dr. Smith serves as Dean of Nursing and Professor at Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Portland, Oregon. Known for his dedication to the nursing profession and passion for providing exceptional patient care, Dr. Smith has made a lasting impact in his field. He is the Co-Editor of Family Health Care Nursing: Theory, Practice and Research, a widely used textbook across the United States and Canada.
A proud Southern Union graduate, Dr. Smith earned his Associate Degree in Nursing from SUSCC before continuing his education with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix, a master’s degree in nursing from Washington State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He remains committed to giving back, providing an annual scholarship to Southern Union students in memory of his mother, Helen W. Smith.
The Distinguished Community Partner Award was presented to CARE Humane Society for its outstanding collaboration with Southern Union’s Veterinary Technology Program. Through this partnership, students gain hands-on clinical experience by working with live animals, enhancing their skills in evaluation and treatment.
CARE Humane Society plays an active role in the program’s success, with its Executive Director and Health Manager regularly participating in advisory board meetings. The organization is a strong advocate for the program, offering meaningful opportunities for student growth. Most recently, CARE established tuition scholarships for Veterinary Technology students who commit to employment with the organization following graduation—providing both financial support and a direct pathway into the workforce within the local community.
Proceeds from the evening will support the Southern Union Foundation Scholarship Fund and benefit students across the college.
“We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our community and alumni,” said Gretchen Van Valkenburg, Executive Director of Advancement and Community Relations at Southern Union. “Their generosity not only makes events like this possible, but more importantly, it creates life-changing opportunities for our students.”
