Mary Elizabeth Reeves Alsobrook, known lovingly as Mary by family and friends and “Miss Mary” by many of her former students, passed away on May 6, 2026, in Opelika, Alabama, at the age of 88.
Mary was born on April 17, 1938, in Abanda, Alabama, to C.M. Reeves and Mattie Reeves. She lived a life marked by devotion, grace, and steady kindness, and she was cherished by all who knew her. Mary was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother whose gentle spirit and warm heart left a lasting impression on her family and community. She was known for being loving and kind, and those qualities were reflected in the way she cared for others throughout her life. If she went somewhere in town, she was going to know someone or have a connection to them in some way.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jimmy Alsobrook; her parents, C.M. Reeves and Mattie Reeves; and her brothers, Charles Reeves, Jack Reeves, Billie Reeves, and Bobby Reeves. Though she experienced the loss of many dear loved ones, she carried their memory with strength and faith, and she remained a source of comfort and encouragement to those around her. She was a faithful caregiver to her husband and parents in their later years of life. Her family was her greatest love, she was happiest when her home was filled with her six grandchildren, and she would take them on trips about town to the dollar store with dollars in hand or the library to explore books.
She is survived by her sons, James Alsobrook and John Alsobrook and his wife, Leigh; her grandchildren, Ben Alsobrook, Jacob Alsobrook and his wife, Katie, Sarah Kate Alsobrook, Luke Alsobrook, Noah Alsobrook, and Leeanne Alsobrook; her great-grandson, Asher Alsobrook; her sister-in-law, Dot Reeves; Gretchen Reeves; Anne Alsobrook; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her family was the center of her life, and she took great joy in each generation that followed her. Her love for them was steadfast, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to call her mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Mary devoted more than 30 years of her life to education as a Chambers County educator at Springwood, Lanett, Huguley, Langdale, Fairfax Elementary schools. She was loved greatly touching the lives of countless students through her work. Her commitment to teaching reflected her belief in the value of learning and it showed through her greatest love was when given the opportunity to work with students needing additional help learning to read. She was respected for her patience, her integrity, and her quiet strength, and her influence extended far beyond the classroom. She was also active in the Delta Kappa Gamma teacher’s organization.
A devoted member of First Baptist of Lanett, Mary found strength and fellowship in her faith. Her church family was an important part of her life, and she lived out her beliefs through kindness, humility, and service to others through her Women’s Missionary Union group. Her faith guided her through life’s joys and sorrows, and it remained a steady source of comfort throughout her years.
Mary Elizabeth Reeves Alsobrook will be remembered for her loving heart, her kind nature, and the deep devotion she showed to her family, her church, and her community. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and in the family she so dearly loved. Though she is no longer with us, her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew her.
