The LaFayette City Council recognized Chambers County Coroner Jeff Jones on Monday for 20 years of service.

Councilmember Charlene Story read a proclamation honoring Jones, who was surrounded by family and friends. Jones is retiring as coroner, and voters will elect a new coroner Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026.

A lifelong LaFayette resident, Jones has owned Jeff Jones Funeral Home since 1998. He said he was grateful for the council’s recognition.

“I just love this community. Always have and always will,” Jones said.

Jones said he will continue operating the funeral home after retiring as coroner.

In other business, Blessed Body & Fitness CEO Pam Whitlow Holloway and her husband, the Rev. Terrence Holloway, spoke to the council about the fifth annual Taking It Back to the Streets Dancing for a Cure Health Fair. Councilmember Emily Milford read a proclamation recognizing the event.

The council also discussed an unsafe manhole on Alabama Avenue East. Water and Sewer Superintendent Allen Garrett said the condition poses a hazard to bus traffic and prompted a request for emergency repair approval.

The council took no action on the matter. It will be discussed at a future meeting.
