Joel Mark Humphrey, 59, passed away on June 23, 2026.
Born on February 14, 1967, Mark lived a life marked by resilience, determination, and an unwavering spirit. Following a tragic car accident in 1988 that left him paralyzed from the waist down, he faced each day with strength and courage. He never allowed his wheelchair to define him or prevent him from living life to the fullest. In his younger years, he was known as the life of the party, always quick with a laugh, a story, or a joke.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and had a personality that naturally drew people in. A devoted sports fan, he was an avid fan of the Auburn Tigers and could always be found cheering them on. He was also a dedicated NASCAR fan and proudly rooted for his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon.
Since 2015, he had resided at Lanier Nursing Home, where he formed meaningful friendships and was cared for by many compassionate individuals who came to know and appreciate his strength and character. He will be remembered for his determination, sense of humor, love of sports and racing, and the way he faced life’s challenges head-on. More than anything, he will be remembered for the example he set, showing that even in the face of adversity, life can be lived with courage and heart.
He is survived by his daughter, Ashley (Cody) Sims; his beloved grandchildren, Kyleigh Morgan and Landen Sims; his sisters, Teia (Casey) Cunningham, and April (James) Bright; and his aunts, Ginger (Ronnie) Smith, who was like a second mother to him, Sheila (Bo) Eason, and Debbie (Marvin) Huff.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sheree Ellington, and his grandparents, Louise and Claude Threadgill.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life, 2:30 P.M., Monday, June 29, 2026, at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley, Alabama. Pastor Rusty Letson will officiate.
Visitation will be from 1:30 P.M. until the hour of service at 2:30 P.M.
Though he is no longer with us, his memory, strength, and spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. War Eagle, and rest easy.
