Ms. Kate Frances Hughley Menefee, 78, of Opelika (formerly of LaFayette) died Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Compassus Bethany House, Auburn. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, 22455 Veterans Memorial Pkwy, LaFayette, AL, at 11:00 a.m. (CST) with Pastor Jamall Cunningham, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The remains will lie in state at the church from 10:00 a.m. (CST) until the funeral hour.

Kate was born January 23, 1946, in Chambers County, Alabama and at an early age, became a dedicated & lifelong member of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, LaFayette, AL.

Her children and grandchildren affectionately called her “Katie Mae” or “Katie Bell.” She was a true believer, reading Bible verses every morning and praying every day. Kate was well known for her strong work ethic, working three jobs at times to provide for her family. Simply stated, Kate was a powerful, loving and caring force in the lives of so many in her family and throughout the entire community.

She retired from East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) as a supervisor of the Environmental Services Department after 25 years of service. She was a beloved and well-respected leader by her employees and colleagues.

Kate was preceded in death by her father, Pustell Hughley, mother, Addie Mae Hughley, and son, Eric Keith Menefee.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory to six children: Kay Dowell of Waverly, AL; Kenneth “Jerome” Menefee, Dr. Arturo (Tanya) Menefee, and Justin Menefee, all of Opelika, AL; Valarie (Tyrone) Turner and Roslyn Payne, both of Auburn, AL; two special granddaughters: Candice Menefee of Auburn, AL and Nekeisha Reese of LaFayette, AL; two special great-grandsons: Jacarious Holland of Opelika, AL and Cody Ambus of Auburn, AL; three sisters: Lola Comer and Almeda (Jerry) Walker, both of Opelika, AL and Annie (John) Torbert of Auburn, AL; one brother: Walter (Camilla) Hughley of LaFayette, AL; a very special niece: Barbara Ann Cunningham of Anniston, AL; a dear friend: Rosie Bolden of Opelika, AL, devoted caregiver: Lawanda Middleton of Valley, AL; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
