The City of Opelika Fire Department (OFD) will begin its annual fire hydrant maintenance program in May.

“This work will continue over the next two months and includes painting, routine maintenance, and flow testing of hydrants across the city”, said the city in a press release.

During May, crews will focus on routine maintenance and applying fresh coats of paint to hydrants. In June, OFD will continue maintenance efforts and begin flow testing. Flow testing may result in large volumes of water being discharged throughout different areas of the city.

As this work takes place, residents may notice water in roadways, temporary discoloration of household water, or saturated areas in yards. These conditions are normal and short-term. OFD will make every effort to minimize any inconvenience to the community.

“We also want to remind residents that Opelika is currently not under any water restrictions and appreciate your patience and understanding as OFD completes this important work to maintain and improve the city’s water system”, added the city of Opelika.
