OPELIKA-On Tuesday, residents of Opelika addressed the council regarding the Planning Commission’s recent review of a rezoning request on White Road during the public comment session.

“Although this rezoning is accessed from 598 Dunlop Drive, it directly affects the character and development pattern along White Road. The Planning Commission, as you know, recommended denial by a four-to-three vote after discussing compatibility with the existing character of White Road and concerns about the increasing intensity of development along that corridor. Currently, White Road functions as a low-density residential area with large-lot, single-family homes, and this character was a significant part of the commission’s discussion.

We understand that growth is vital for our city, and we are not opposed to development. We are simply asking that growth remain compatible with the existing pattern of this long, wide road. We respectfully urge the council to consider upholding the Planning Commission’s recommendation,” said resident Carolyn Reed.

Another resident, Buddy Bruce, also expressed his concerns to the council.

“The Bruces own the property on the right side of White Road. It is a low-density residential area with five or six houses on that side and a few on the left side. The character of that neighborhood features large estate lots, which we appreciate. We are not opposed to development; we just request lower density for the property along White Road,” Bruce stated.

There was no discussion or pending action on the aforementioned property at this time, as this was simply a session for citizen remarks.
