On Tuesday, the Opelika Council postponed the request for a specialty license for Top Shelf Alternatives, LLC, which pertains to a product license for consumable hemp products. The Council voted 3-2 to table the request.
Opelika resident Denise Butson-Grimes expressed her frustrations following the vote. “When I went to Top Shelf and tried their gummies, it was the first time I have slept in years. My husband is here and can vouch for me. I’d really like to know what the problem is. Insomnia affects many people. I’m not someone who uses it to get high for fun; I use it to sleep. I’m curious as to why everyone is saying no to this, unless they have a very good reason.
Now I have to go to Georgia and give my money to another state, which I really don’t want to do. I’d like to support small businesses in our own state, and I can’t understand why, after all these years, you suddenly decided to take this away from a small business or at least deny them a license. If it were liquor, I bet he would be granted a license, but that’s beside the point.
I just don’t understand, and it really makes me mad that I have to support another state and another small business when I can do it right here in my own state and community,” said Butson-Grimes.
Look for the council to revisit this conversation in the near future.
