February 23, 1936 ~ March 8, 2025 (age 89)

Lyle Matthias Blatt, affectionately known as Opa, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2025, at the age of 89 in Valley, Alabama. Born on February 23, 1936, in Batavia, New York, Lyle was a man of exceptional character, whose loving, kind, and creative spirit touched the lives of all who knew him.

Lyle’s life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his faith. He is survived by his adoring daughters, Jackie (John) Holt and Maggie (Robert) Phares; his son, Wayne (Carla) Blatt; grandchildren; Jared Holt, Jessica Drye, Jacob Holt, Jonah Holt, Zach Blatt, Tanner Blatt, Mary Frazier, Stephanie Frazier, Drew Frazier, Michael Summers, and Casey Summers, his sisters-in-laws, Sandra (Raymond) Alexander and Celia Pollard; his brother-in-law, Jimmy (Debra) Rutledge; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren who will cherish his memory. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Helen Blatt; his brothers, Charles Blatt Jr. and Wayne Blatt; his sister, Beverley Smith; and his daughter, Janice Blatt.

But it was his beloved wife, Sylvia Rutledge Blatt of fifty-five years that he missed most after her death in 2015. Together as a couple they faced the many joys and sorrows of life.

A proud veteran, Lyle retired with military honors, having served his country with distinction and valor receiving the purple heart, bronze star and the ARVN Armor branch insignia granted by the commanding officer command republic of Vietnam Armed Forces. His commitment to service was a testament to his strength of character and his deep sense of patriotism. Following his military career, Lyle continued to make a positive impact on his community through his involvement with various associations, where his leadership and generosity were greatly valued.

Lyle’s passion for life was evident in his many interests. He was a pillar of his church congregation, where he shared his faith and compassion with those around him. An avid fan of Auburn softball, he could often be found cheering on the team, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship. His love for arts and crafts not only showcased his creative talents but also served as a means for him to connect with his family and friends, creating lasting memories and beautiful keepsakes.

Those who had the pleasure of knowing Lyle will remember him as a man who lived his life with joy and purpose. His warm smile, hearty laugh, and the twinkle in his eye were sources of comfort and happiness to many. Lyle’s legacy is one of love, kindness, and creativity, and it will continue to live on through the lives of those he touched.

As we bid farewell to Lyle Matthias Blatt, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man dearly loved. His journey on this earth may have come to an end, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends. Rest in peace, Opa. Your memory will be a blessing to us all.
