Funeral service for Kattie Shorter, 81, of Opelika, AL, will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 14, 2026, at St. Mark A.M.E Church, 4141 Anderson Road, Opelika, AL, 36801, with interment in Garden Hills Cemetery, 1218 Frederick Road, Opelika, AL, 36801. Reverend Jonathan Benton will officiate.
Mrs. Shorter, who passed away Saturday, March 7, 2026, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, was born April 15, 1944, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama.
Public viewing will be on Friday, March 13, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Mrs. Shorter will lie in repose at the church one hour before the service.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory: three children, Rosetta Shorter of Decatur, GA, Lillie Shorter and Carrie Shorter Carr both of Opelika, AL; sixteen grandchildren, Danielius Shorter, Rodriquez Shorter, Khalif Kellum, Sassiquea Shorter, Colotta Shorter, Tonisha Carr, Tarence Barrow, Jr., Antwain Shorter, Jamelia Shorter all of Opelika, AL, Demetrious Shorter of Harvest, AL, Artissa Shorter, DeCosmon Shorter both of Decatur, GA, Nicholas (Chelett) Owens of Mobile, AL, Love Carr of Austin, TX, Temeka Curtis and Shamela Curtis both of Columbus, GA; twenty-three great-grandchildren, Tylexus, Temarius, ShaKarsha, KaJaden, Jusstin, Kylee, Montavious, Jr., Zamillian, Zion, Caden, Gabbi, Codie, Nicholas Jr., Jalen, Alecta, Genesis, Tajah, Aijah, Khaliah, Brandon, Jr., Nyla, Za.Mya and Za’Kya; three great-great-grandchildren, Aviana, Xylori and Kaleigh; two sisters, Maude (Elmer) Riley of Notasulga, AL and Annie Elizabeth Ricks of East St. Louis, MO; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Parker, Katie Hughley, Geraldine (Joe) Tinsley all of Opelika, AL and Tessie Ricks of Notasulga, AL; five brothers-in-law, Henry (Eloise) Shorter, Jasper Shorter, Emanuel Shorter, Henry Clark all of Opelika, AL and Lorenza (Wiltha) Haynes of Columbus, OH; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
