Tuscaloosa, Ala – Mrs. Jennie Cotney Cowart, 88, of Tuscaloosa, formerly of Lanett, died Tuesday, February 24th, 2026.
She is survived by her daughter, Sally Clark (Eddie) of Lanett; her son, Dick Cowart (Karen) of Glen, MS; her daughter-in-law, Lydia Cowart of Birmingham; four grandchildren, Nathan Clark, Hugh Cowart, Nick Cowart, and Sarah Beth Cowart; and her brother, Jerry Cotney (Patsy) of Auburn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Sara Cotney of Roanoke; her husband, Richard of Tuscaloosa; and her son, Ernie of Birmingham.
Mrs. Cowart graduated from Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo), where she studied music. She began her career teaching music in LaGrange, GA, and later at Springwood School in Lanett.
Jennie was an active member of the University of Alabama National Alumni Association, was a member of the University of Alabama President’s Cabinet, served on the Library Board and would help decorate the President’s Mansion for Football games and other special events. She was most recently a member of the First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa and a long-standing active member of the First Baptist Church of Lanett.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 28th, 2026, at 2:30 PM (EST) at the First Baptist Church of Lanett. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Mrs. Cowart’s family will receive friends Saturday afternoon at the church from 1:00 PM (EST) until the service hour. Pastor David Bradshaw and Mr. Eddie Clark will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the First Baptist Church of Lanett, The University of Alabama National Alumni Association – Cowart/Fowler Scholarship Fund, Springwood School or the charity of one’s choice.
