Inmate Death Under Investigation at Chambers County Detention Facility

Chambers County, AL — On January 4, 2025, at approximately 11:45 a.m., a female inmate at the Chambers County Detention Facility was found unresponsive in her assigned holding cell. Detention deputies and medical personnel immediately began lifesaving measures and contacted 911 for emergency assistance.

Lafayette Fire & EMS responded and continued resuscitation efforts; however, the attempts were unsuccessful, and the inmate was pronounced deceased.

Following standard protocol, Sheriff Nelson requested the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to conduct an independent investigation. All evidence was turned over to SBI upon their arrival.

The deceased inmate has been identified as Leanna Washington, 36, of LaGrange, GA. She had been booked into the facility on December 28, 2024, on drug-related charges following an arrest by the Valley Police Department.

Authorities confirmed that no other inmates or detention deputies were involved in the incident. No additional information will be released until SBI concludes its investigation.
