The Valley Boys Varsity Baseball team fell to a record of 4-3-1 on Saturday, ending their three-game winning streak with a 2-1 loss to Handley. The Rams were unable to replicate the success they had earlier in the season when they defeated the Tigers 11-1.
Unfortunately, Valley could not match the offensive production they achieved in their previous game against Handley. “Our goal is to score five runs. If we get to five runs, we feel like we have a chance to win. In two of the three games we lost this year, we didn’t reach five runs. If we had, we would be sitting here at 7-1,” said Rams Head Baseball Coach Mike Meadows.
With this victory, Handley improved their record to 4-4. Skylar Hester shone on the mound for Handley, pitching all seven innings and allowing only one earned run on four hits. Hester has emerged as a key player for the Tigers; the team remains undefeated when he allows one earned run or fewer, but has a record of 1-4 otherwise.
On the offensive side, Zae Dunson played a crucial role, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances and scoring one run. Valley’s pitching, which has been strong throughout the year, kept Handley off balance for most of the game. “The pitching has been solid, and we have performed well all year. You can’t ask much more from our pitchers than what they’ve delivered. They give us a chance to win in almost every game we’ve played,” added Meadows.
Looking ahead, both teams will be on the road for their upcoming contests. Valley will face Benjamin Russell at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, while Handley will take on Talladega at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
