Early C. McKnight, affectionately known as Early to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, at the age of 87 in Opelika, Alabama. Born on July 9, 1937, in the Plant City Community of Chambers County, Alabama, Early laid down his roots and cultivated a life marked by kindness, friendliness, and wisdom.

A dedicated employee, Early spent his entire career with West Point Pepperell where his diligence and work ethic were a testament to his character. Beyond his professional life, he committed his time and energy to serve the community. For over 30 years, he served on the boards of the H. Grady Bradshaw Library and the Cobb Memorial Archives, enriching the lives of those who sought knowledge and preservation of history. Furthermore, Early’s generous spirit led him to volunteer with Chattahoochee Hospice, and for over two decades, he worked alongside the Salvation Army, contributing to the well-being of countless individuals.

Early’s zest for life was paralleled by his enduring love for his family. He is survived by his son, Early McKnight, III (Wanda) of Murfreesboro, TN; his two grandsons, Carson McKnight (Kelsey) also of Murfreesboro, TN, and Hunter McKnight of Portland, OR; and his two joy-inducing great-grandchildren, Amelia and Oliver McKnight. He is also remembered by his brother-in-law, Alton Dennis Whittemore, Jr. (Martha); his niece, Patta Wolford (Greg); his great-niece and nephew, Marguerite Wolford-Kaatz (Ethan) and Alexander Wolford; his cousins, Rev. His legacy of love and connection is evident in the deep bonds he formed with those around him.

Early was preceded in death by his loving parents, Early C. McKnight, Sr. and Julia High McKnight; two infant brothers; and a cousin, Christine Maaytah, who held a special place in his heart.

A lifelong member of Shawmut Methodist Church, Early’s faith guided him through all seasons of his life. As an ardent Atlanta Braves fan since the team’s arrival in Atlanta in 1966, he shared this passion with his grandchildren, often taking them to games and basking in the shared excitement. His love for the simple joys in daily life was reflected in his love for taking his grandchildren to Six Flags, and in the pleasure he found in his morning coffee gatherings with friends at Jack’s.

His kindness wove a tapestry of love and support that enveloped his family, friends, and community. Early C.
