LAFAYETTE – During the Chambers County Commissioner meeting on Monday, resident Calvin Estes expressed his concerns about County Road 53 and County Road 121.
“I feel like money was wasted by putting a yellow line down the middle of County Road 53 and County Road 121; that money was also wasted. You can’t drive on your side of the road without the passenger side wheels running off the edge because the edge of the road is gone. There are so many potholes that have been filled with a truck that sprays a handful of tar followed by gravel, but the first time it rains, it’s all washed away. This is damaging our cars, and it’s incredibly frustrating.
I invite any of you to come and drive on County Road 53 and 121 all day and see how long your car lasts while trying to stay on your side of the road. Yet here we are, with County Road 114 getting paved and the stretch of 431 to 77 being paved as well, even though it didn’t really need it.
I have lived on County Road 121 for 40 years, and in that time, I haven’t seen it paved once, while County Road 114 has been paved two or three times. I understand that 114 may have a bit more traffic, but 40 years without any paving is unacceptable. How many times has your road been paved? County Road 53, from the intersection at 123 all the way to County Road 77, needs attention; it’s in terrible condition. However, we’re repaving roads that don’t really need it.
Why can’t we prioritize paving the roads that genuinely need it? Please don’t tell me about a 10-year, 5-year, or even 20-year plan,” Estes stated.
Commissioner James “Moto” Williams concluded the discussion by informing Estes that there will be a meeting on Tuesday at the highway department at 5 o’clock Central.
