**CHAMBERS COUNTY** – On Monday, the Chambers County Commissioners approved a resolution to extend the one-cent sales tax, which was first implemented in 1980. This sales tax has been renewed by voters twice for school system projects. The most recent extension, which received overwhelming support, was approved in 2014 and is set to run until 2045. The new resolution adds an additional 10 years, extending it now through 2055.

“This tax provides the Chambers Board of Education with the ability to issue bonds to cover the costs of the new consolidated school,” said Chambers Commissioner David Eastridge.

“The additional ten years for the existing sales tax gives us the flexibility to negotiate a practical payment plan. Because of this vote, we can now begin moving the process forward,” stated Chambers County School Superintendent Dr. Sharon Welson.

This extension will supply the Chambers County Board of Education with the financial resources needed for an estimated $90 million for the consolidated high school.

Chambers County Attorney Skip McCoy noted, “What the school board is requesting is not to create a new tax, but rather to extend a tax that is already in place.” He also addressed whether a public vote was necessary, explaining, “Under Section 40.12.4 of the Alabama Code, commissioners are allowed to vote on an extension without seeking voter approval, as previous commissions have done.”

The one-cent sales tax generates approximately $4 million annually, with 80% allocated to county schools and 20% to Lanett Schools.

In the roll call vote, Commissioners Charlie Williams, David Eastridge, Sam Bradford, and Debra Riley voted in favor of the resolution. Chambers County Chairman Douglas Jones abstained, while Commissioner James “Moto” Williams voted against it. The resolution ultimately passed with a vote of 4 in favor, 1 against, and 1 abstention.
