April 18, 1927 ~ April 24, 2025 (age 98)

Betty Jo Hamil, a cherished resident of Valley, Alabama, and affectionately known to many as Betty Jo, passed away on April 24, 2025, at the golden age of 98. Born on April 18, 1927, in Riverview, Alabama, to Anderson Sands and Eugenia Maude Anthony Sands, she was a source of warmth and community spirit throughout her life.

Betty Jo’s journey began in Riverview and led her on a dedicated career path with the U. S. Postal Service, where she loyally served for over 37 years. Her academic journey saw its culmination as a proud graduate of Valley High School, a foundation that supported her exemplary work ethic and commitment to service.

She found love with her late husband, Hugo LaFayette Hamil, and together they actively participated in their community, especially with the Riverview Baptist Church. They are fondly remembered for their time as chaperones at numerous church events, where their guidance touched many lives.  For the last several years, Betty Jo has attended Langdale Methodist Church.

Aside from her professional life, Betty Jo was known for her boundless energy and passions which included running (in years past), crafts, devoting time to civic and church work, and for the last several years studying her devotionals and scriptures. Her vibrant personality and enduring kindness made her a friend to all, and her presence at community gatherings will be deeply missed. Betty Jo’s life was a testament to her values—kindness, friendliness, and thoughtfulness were the hallmarks of her existence.

She leaves behind a loving legacy among her many nieces, nephews, and cousins, while joining her predeceased husband Hugo, her parents, and her siblings Norman, Leon, Homer, Ralph, Phillip J., Lillye, Maude, Ruth, Faye, and Genevieve.

Betty Jo’s departure is a profound loss to the community of Valley and all who knew her, yet her spirit will continue to inspire those who remember the life of a truly remarkable lady.
