We gather to honor and celebrate the life of Peggy Jo Marie Schmidt, who passed away peacefully on December 23, 2025, in Opelika, Alabama, at the age of 79. Peggy was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose warmth and kindness touched all who knew her. Born on December 21, 1946, in West Point, Georgia, Peggy’s journey was one of love, dedication, and joy.

Peggy, commemorated as the beloved matriarch of her family, was born to a close-knit family, instilling in her the values of care and compassion that would define her life. She navigated her path with grace, always putting her loved ones at the forefront of her heart. She was the rock and foundation of her family, guiding them through life’s challenges and celebrating its triumphs with unwavering support.

Surviving Peggy is her husband of 58 years, Edward Schmidt, with whom she built an enduring legacy of commitment and affection. Her daughters, Carla Schmidt and Connie Baxter, carry on her spirit, reflecting the lessons of love and kindness she imparted. Peggy was a guiding star in the lives of her grandchildren, Tyler, Cody, and Hailey, who will forever cherish the memories created with their grandmother. She also leaves behind great-grandchildren, Brantley, Corvin, and Chloe, each a testament to her enduring influence across generations. Also, is survived by brothers, David (Judy) Crowder and Ted Crowder, and sister, Linda Wells.

Before her passing, Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry Crowder and Inez Crowder, brother, Henry Clyde Crowder, and sister, Darlene Crowder Woodard. The bonds of family and friendship she forged throughout her life remain as a testament to the connection she had with those around her.

Peggy’s genuine affinity for spending time with her grandchildren was well-known. Her presence at family gatherings will be deeply missed, but the legacy of her nurturing spirit will continue to resonate. Described as loving and kind, she was the embodiment of these traits in her daily interactions and will be remembered for her comforting presence, her easy smile, and the wisdom she shared.
