January 16, 1952 ~ December 6, 2025 (age 73)

James Edward Sims, known affectionately as “YaYa” to his friends and family, left this world richer for his presence on December 6, 2025. He was born in West Point, Georgia, on January 16, 1952, and passed away in the comfort of his home surrounded by many loved ones in Cusseta, Alabama. James’s life was like a book filled with chapters of joy, resilience, and endless love, captivating the hearts of those around him.

James grew up in a bustling household, cherished by his parents, Floyd and Resa Sims, both of whom preceded him in death. He shared a childhood full of adventures with his brothers, Lamar and Clifford Sims, and his sister, Barbara Smith, who alongside a host of nieces and nephews, continue to honor his memory. The loss of his siblings Jeff Sims, Judy Camp, Peggy Bozeman, Janette Duffey, and David Sims marked tender passages in his life’s story, each of them holding a special place in his heart.

In his professional life, James was known for his dedication and hard work. He began his career with Fuller Ford, then moved on to make significant contributions at Bence & Morris, later becoming Bence & Hartley, and finally, Opelika Ford. His colleagues knew him as a reliable and kindhearted man, always ready with a friendly smile and a helping hand.

Above all, the family was James’s greatest passion. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter with his daughter, Pam, and her significant other Shane Stodghill; his son, Terry, and his wife Marshelia Duffey; his grandchildren, Chasity (with Dakota) Akins and Shawn (with Elyse) Redden; and his great-grandchildren, Brynlee Akins and Dean Akins. Each of them was the light of his life, and he cherished every moment spent in their company.

James’s heart was evergreen, as was his love for Alabama Football, which brought him great excitement and camaraderie. His skillful play at the pool table was admired by many and will be recounted in stories shared among friends for years to come. Those who knew him well will recall his love for fishing and his cherished trips down south, always in pursuit of the perfect catch and the tranquility of the outdoors.

Described by those who loved him as exceptionally loving and kind, James will be remembered for the warmth of his character and the depth of his compassion. His was a spirit that lifted others, a presence that comforted, and a voice that never failed to speak with love.

James “Yaya” Edward Sims will be deeply missed, yet his memory will forever inspire us to live fully, love profoundly, and cherish every moment. He set an example of what it means to lead a life filled with grace and kindness, and for that, he will always be remembered in 4 simple words: Handsome, Sweet, Loving, and Awesome.
