Peggy Joan Terrell Gilmore, born on March 8, 1925, in Shawmut, Alabama, passed away peacefully in the early hours of March 3, 2025 in Valley, Alabama.

The daughter of Tiffman and Verna Terrell, Peggy grew up alongside her sister Margaret “Tootsie” and brother William Otis. Peggy is survived by her children, Joan Gilmore Gilbert (Ray) and Paula Gilmore Kirkpatrick Maddox (Buddy); her grandchildren, Trey Gilbert (Amy), Jennifer Gilbert Kirby (Matt), Caleb Kirkpatrick, and Ana Kirkpatrick; and her great-grandchildren, Ty Gilbert, Kasen Kirby, Karter Kirby, Kade Kirby, and Marcos Bailey. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and great nephews. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, her brother and her husband Lawrence Carey Gilmore.

Peggy’s career as a registered nurse spanned 35 years, beginning at Valley Hospital in West Point, Georgia, and then at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley, Alabama, until her retirement. She completed nurse’s training in Birmingham, Alabama.

Peggy had a passion for art, a skill she honed from the age of 12. Even into her 90s, she continued to paint and sketch. She spent her final days with her roommate Linda Hudson at Lanier Nursing Home. She was a member of West Point Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Lanier Nursing Home, the many doctors who cared for her over the past nearly 100 years, and a special thanks to Linda Hudson, Emily Garret and Patti Cribb who shared much with Peggy over the last two years.

Visitation with family will take place Monday, March 10, 2025, from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM (EST) at Johnson Brown Service Funeral Home in Valley, Alabama. Graveside services will follow at 11:30 AM (EST) at Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett with the Reverend Jerry Ledbetter officiating.
