On 06/11/2024, at approximately 2:35 p.m., the Opelika Police Department received a call regarding a vehicle crash on Interstate 85 involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger car. Opelika officers responded to the scene where they were confronted by a subject armed with a knife. The incident ultimately led to an officer-involved shooting.
The subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency/ State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) was called in to investigate in accordance with department protocol. All evidence and videos will be turned over to SBI for their investigation. Once they have completed a full and thorough investigation, the results will be turned over to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office who will present the findings to a Lee County Grand Jury.
