Southern Union State Community College (SUSCC) will be joining the ranks of the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) women’s flag football teams this fall as the sport is added to the college’s athletic programs.
“Flag football is rapidly gaining popularity in our community, and I believe adding it as a sport at our college will be a valuable opportunity for both our athletes and the campus as a whole,” said SU President Todd Shackett.
Play is scheduled to begin at the end of the month. SUSCC will join Wallace Community College-Dothan, Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, Bishop State Community College, Calhoun Community College, Northwest Shoals Community College, Snead State Community College, Shelton State, and Wallace Community College as the two-year institutions committed to fielding a flag football team in the state.
According to Head Coach Meg Larsen, the Bison flag football team will take the field with 15 players.
“Women’s flag football is on the rise at the collegiate level,” said Larsen. “I am excited for the opportunity to expand women’s sports at our college and take the field this season. We have the chance to build something special from the ground up and establish a championship culture that will create a lasting legacy for Southern Union Flag Football.”
The Bison will open the season against Enterprise State at Enterprise on August 30. Home games will be held at Floral Park in Opelika.
