The Legacy of Courage Award was created to recognize veterans who not only served honorably in the United States Armed Forces, but who also exemplify courage, integrity and selfless service throughout their civilian lives. The award reflects Opelika’s deep appreciation for the men and women whose sacrifices helped preserve the freedoms enjoyed today and ensures their stories and legacies are remembered for generations to come.
“To introduce this award, we wanted to honor two men who represent everything the Legacy of Courage Award stands for,” said Leigh Krehling, Community Relations Officer for the City of Opelika. “Boody Brown and Walter Dorsey were members of the Greatest Generation whose lives exemplified service above self, devotion to country and a lifelong commitment to their community. Their example will serve as the standard for all future recipients.”
Brown and Dorsey, both World War II veterans and beloved members of the Opelika community, passed away in February 2026 just days apart.
Orrin “Boody” Brown was a decorated World War II veteran and member of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of today’s CIA. Serving as a bombardier on dangerous covert missions behind enemy lines, his wartime contributions remained classified for decades. A lifelong Opelika resident and Auburn University alumnus, Mr. Brown became known not only for his extraordinary military service, but also for his humility, wisdom, and enduring love for his community and country.
Walter Cullars Dorsey faithfully served his country in the United States Navy during World War II after graduating from Clift High School in 1945. Stationed at P.T. Boat Base 17 in the Philippine Islands, he continued his service in the Naval Reserve following the war. A lifelong Opelika resident, Mr. Dorsey was also deeply committed to his community through his church, civic organizations, and local business leadership. His life reflected quiet patriotism, humility, and a steadfast dedication to others.
