Ruben Cumbee Powell, known to family and friends as Ruben, passed away on June 20, 2026, in Roanoke, Alabama, at the age of 73.
Ruben was born on August 9, 1952, to the late Bobby Powell and the late Nellie Cotney Powell, in Valley, Alabama. He lived a life marked by hard work, curiosity, and a spirit of adventure. He was the kind of man who approached each day with determination and a willingness to take on whatever came his way. Those who knew him will remember his steady presence, his practical nature, and the quiet strength that guided him throughout his life.
Ruben owned a construction company, and through his work he built more than structures. He built a reputation for reliability, craftsmanship, and integrity. He took pride in doing a job well and understood the value of honest labor. His work reflected the same qualities that defined him personally, including perseverance, resourcefulness, and a strong sense of responsibility. He was respected by those who worked alongside him and appreciated by those who depended on him.
Outside of work, Ruben found joy in the simple pleasures that made life meaningful to him. He enjoyed fishing, where he could spend time outdoors and appreciate the calm and patience the pastime required. He also loved dirt track car racing, a pastime that matched his adventurous nature and his appreciation for excitement and skill. He was always happiest when he had something to tinker with, and he enjoyed figuring out how things worked and making them better. His hands were rarely idle, and his mind was always engaged.
Ruben will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Bandi Harmon and her husband, Mark, his son, Dallas Powell, and his grandchildren, Nick Harmon and Kelsea Harmon.
He took great pride in his family and valued the time he spent with them. His love for them was evident in the way he lived, worked, and carried himself each day. He leaves behind memories that will be treasured by those who knew him best and by all who were fortunate enough to share in his life. Ruben Cumbee Powell’s life was a testament to dedication, independence, and love of family. Though he is no longer with us, his memory will remain a lasting source of comfort and strength to those who knew and loved him.
