On Saturday, local Valley author Wendy Wilkerson held a book signing at Maples Flowers and Designs, where homemade refreshments were served.
Wilkerson was present to discuss her book, *Swamp Monsters*, which tells the story of a war veteran grappling with PTSD after returning home to Louisiana. Upon his return, he faces his wife’s terminal cancer diagnosis and uncovers human remains on his property, as someone tries to frame him for murder.
“*Swamp Monsters* is a work of fiction and a mystery. It’s based on a World War II veteran who also served in the Korean War. He lived near a swamp in Louisiana. The character, Tom, came home from the war struggling with battle fatigue. He learned that his wife had terminal cancer and realized he would soon become a single parent.
He grieved for his wife while oil was discovered on their property, bringing in many greedy people. Some individuals began to disappear, and they were trying to blame Tom for everything. A diabolical adversary was attempting to frame Tom and send him to prison,” Wilkerson shared.
Wilkerson also spoke with East Alabama News about her inspiration for writing the book. “I’ve always enjoyed writing. My dad was from Louisiana, and he would share stories about the unique happenings there, like encounters with alligators and snakes. As a two-time breast cancer survivor, I needed a therapeutic outlet, so I started writing, and it just took off from there,” she explained.
*Swamp Monsters* is now available on Amazon, Kindle, and at Maples Flowers and Designs in Valley. Wilkerson is also currently working on a sequel.
