OPELIKA, Ala. – The Opelika Police Department (OPD) is officially opening registration for its popular Spring 2026 Citizens Police Academy (CPA). This free, eight-week program offers residents a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of their local law enforcement agency.

The academy is designed to foster transparency and strengthen the bond between officers and the community. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of various police divisions, ranging from administrative operations to high-intensity tactical units.

   

The Spring 2026 session begins Thursday, March 26, and classes will meet every Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CST.

“The Citizens Police Academy is an excellent opportunity for the community to gain knowledge about the police department and build lasting relationships with our officers,” said Police Chief Johnathan Clifton.

“Over the years, this program has grown significantly, providing our citizens with valuable insight into police operations and the challenges our officers face daily to keep Opelika safe.”

The curriculum provides a mix of classroom instruction and hands-on experiences. Highlights of the eight-week course include:

• Mock Traffic Stops: Practice traffic enforcement and impaired driving Simulations.

• Investigative Insights: Learn from Detectives about Crime Scene

Investigations and Vice & Narcotics operations.

• Tactical Demonstrations: Get up close with the K9 Unit and the SWAT Team.

• Virtual Reality Training: Experience the APEX Officer system, a state-of- the-art VR simulator that puts participants in the shoes of an officer forced to make split-second, life-saving decisions.

Registration for the academy closes on Monday, March 9. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance during the week of March 16.
